Kerton House

Designed as an alpine retreat, and a private oasis for its owners, the Kerton Residence is surrounded by trees and is settled amidst mountainous hills on the outskirts of Queenstown.

Good design, is as much about understanding the client’s goals for the property, as it is about a knowledge of light, space and form.

The entry courtyard is sparse and fort-like, and contrasts with the openness of the interior space once inside the home. Living areas are designed around a courtyard, which allows the sun to heat the internal spaces, while creating a sheltered outdoor living area. The bedrooms are a series of separate stacked timber boxes, rotated for privacy and views.

We started with a list of features that we wished for in a house and ended up with a house that fulfilled every wish. We particularly love the fact that the quality of the design and build are immeasurably satisfying.

A key design driver for this project was to ensure the use of durable materials which would be able to weather the harsh climate. The house façade features timber shutters allowing the buildings’ envelope to be adjusted in order to provide light or shade in response to the season.
