Kerton House

Designed as an alpine retreat, and a private oasis for its owners, the Kerton Residence is surrounded by trees and is settled amidst mountainous hills on the outskirts of Queenstown.

Katrina and Alister did an outstanding job designing our house for us; we liked their design philosophy and, in working through the design, we felt they struck a pleasant balance between aesthetic goals and practical and budgeting requirements for the home.

The entry courtyard is sparse and fort-like, and contrasts with the openness of the interior space once inside the home. Living areas are designed around a courtyard, which allows the sun to heat the internal spaces, while creating a sheltered outdoor living area. The bedrooms are a series of separate stacked timber boxes, rotated for privacy and views.

I told my children that they are so lucky to have a home that is world class and envied by many.

A key design driver for this project was to ensure the use of durable materials which would be able to weather the harsh climate. The house façade features timber shutters allowing the buildings’ envelope to be adjusted in order to provide light or shade in response to the season.
