Kerton House

Designed as an alpine retreat, and a private oasis for its owners, the Kerton Residence is surrounded by trees and is settled amidst mountainous hills on the outskirts of Queenstown.

Alister and Katrina were extremely easy to work with and quickly picked up on what we needed and the resulting house exceeded our expectations. Their professional partnership allowed us access to both Alister’s design expertise and Katrina’s floor plan and interior design skills. Our family and friends have all been blown away by the beauty of the house and we are very proud of it.

The entry courtyard is sparse and fort-like, and contrasts with the openness of the interior space once inside the home. Living areas are designed around a courtyard, which allows the sun to heat the internal spaces, while creating a sheltered outdoor living area. The bedrooms are a series of separate stacked timber boxes, rotated for privacy and views.

Three years on after moving in, we still love living in the spaces created and would happily recommend them to anyone looking for a home with a difference.

A key design driver for this project was to ensure the use of durable materials which would be able to weather the harsh climate. The house façade features timber shutters allowing the buildings’ envelope to be adjusted in order to provide light or shade in response to the season.
